Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a one-time deal, and there are no extensions. Generally, it lasts as long as your study program. So, if you have 2 years credentials, you will get a 1-year PGWP and if 1 year credential then 8 months to 1-year PGWP.

So, if your PGWP is expired then what are the possible ways to stay in Canada beyond that?

  1. APPLY FOR IMMIGRATION

If you are applying to certain immigration programs, you will qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP), which allows you to remain on legal status in Canada if PGWP expires before you are approved for your Permanent Residency.

The immigration programs are as follows: –

  • Express Entry
  • PNP’s
  • Atlantic Immigration Pilot
  • Family Sponsorship

2. STAY AS A TEMPORARY RESIDENT

If none of these options work, so there are other alternatives to extend your stay in Canada.

  • Work permits- LMIA’s and trade agreements

Labor Market Impact Assessment or LMIA is usually long and is approved by Service Canada to eligible applicants. However, Canada also has some trade agreements that allow citizens of certain countries to work in Canada without an LMIA.
