Parental Sponsorship – Bring Your Parents & Grandparents to Canada

The Family Class Sponsorship Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents (PGP) for permanent residence in Canada. This program provides an opportunity for families to reunite and build a future together in Canada.

Each year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts a limited number of applications under the Parental Sponsorship Program. Approved applicants receive Canadian permanent residency and may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting residency requirements.

Who Can Sponsor Their Parents & Grandparents?

To qualify as a sponsor, you must meet the following requirements:

Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Be at least 18 years old
Meet the minimum income requirement for three consecutive years
Sign a sponsorship undertaking to financially support your parents or grandparents for 20 years
Provide proof of income from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

If a co-signer (spouse or common-law partner) is included in the sponsorship application, their income will also be considered.

Financial Requirements for Parental Sponsorship

Sponsors must meet minimum income requirements to prove they can financially support their parents or grandparents without relying on government assistance. The following sources of income cannot be counted towards eligibility:

❌ Provincial social assistance or training allowances
❌ Employment Insurance (EI) payments (excluding special benefits)
❌ Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) payments
❌ Resettlement assistance from the Government of Canada
❌ Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) under the Old Age Security (OAS) Act

New permanent residents in Canada must wait at least three years before applying to sponsor their parents unless they previously held temporary status.
