Express Entry: A Pathway to Canadian Permanent Residence

The Express Entry system is a dynamic and efficient way to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Launched in January 2015, this electronic application management system is used to manage applications for Canada’s most popular immigration programs. Whether you’re applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class, Express Entry offers a streamlined process for eligible candidates to immigrate to Canada.

How Does Express Entry Work?

Express Entry is designed for economic immigrants who want to live and work in Canada. The first step is to assess your eligibility for one of the federal economic immigration programs. If you qualify, you can create an online profile and enter the Express Entry pool.

In the pool, candidates are ranked based on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) that awards points for key factors such as:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Language proficiency (English and/or French)
  • Work experience
  • Job offers
  • Provincial nominations

Express Entry Eligibility Criteria

To enter the Express Entry pool, candidates must meet the basic requirements of one of the three federal programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

Candidates are ranked based on a maximum score of 1200 points. Points are awarded for factors that demonstrate a candidate’s potential to succeed in Canada:

  • Job Offer (50 to 200 points, depending on NOC classification)
  • Education (5 to 30 points based on diploma or degree level)
  • Provincial Nomination (600 points)
  • Language Proficiency (up to 160 points, depending on language test scores)
  • Age (up to 110 points, with varying points depending on age group)
  • Work Experience (additional points based on Canadian or foreign work experience)

The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for Permanent Residency through Invitation to Apply (ITA). Once you receive an ITA, you will have 90 days to submit your application for permanent residence.

Federal Skilled Worker Program: Key Requirements

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is ideal for candidates with work experience in skilled occupations. To be eligible, candidates must meet the following:

  • Work Experience: Minimum one year of paid, full-time work experience in a skilled occupation (NOC 0, A, or B).
  • Language Ability: Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or French.
  • Education: A valid diploma or degree from a recognized institution, or an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign qualifications.

What Documents Are Required for Express Entry?

To complete your Express Entry application, you’ll need to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of Identity (passport, national identity card)
  • Language Test Results (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF)
  • Educational Credentials (ECA report for foreign education)
  • Work Experience (reference letters, pay stubs, contracts)
  • Job Offer (if applicable)
  • Provincial Nomination Certificate (if applicable)
