Canada is preparing for a major digital upgrade to the Express Entry system, as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) works on new technology for managing immigration applications.
The modernization is expected to change how applicants interact with IRCC online, but it is important to understand that this is primarily a technology modernization project, not an announced overhaul of Express Entry eligibility, CRS scoring or invitation rules.
What Is Changing in Express Entry?
According to IRCC’s 2026 Digital Platform Modernization information, the department is developing a new case management platform and plans to introduce a new Expression of Interest system for Express Entry as part of its early releases.
IRCC is also expanding a consolidated online account designed to provide clients with a more unified digital experience. Express Entry applicants are identified as the next client group targeted for access.
The modernization is being introduced in stages rather than through one single launch.
IRCC has not announced an exact launch date for the new Express Entry system. Its current transition documentation refers to work continuing “in the coming year,” meaning implementation could extend into 2027. Any specific launch month being discussed publicly should therefore be treated as an expectation rather than an official IRCC deadline.
Will CRS Scores or Express Entry Rules Change?
At present, the digital modernization documents do not announce changes to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), Express Entry eligibility or the basic invitation process.
Currently, eligible candidates enter the Express Entry pool and receive a CRS score based on factors such as education, language ability, age and work experience. IRCC then conducts invitation rounds and invites eligible candidates according to the instructions for each round.
Canada currently manages three programs through Express Entry:
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
IRCC also conducts category-based selection for certain groups, including areas such as French-language proficiency, healthcare, STEM, trades, education, transport and other categories established by the department.
Therefore, applicants should not assume that the new technology means a new CRS formula or a completely different Express Entry selection system.
What Does the New Digital System Mean for Applicants?
The modernization is intended to create a more integrated digital experience.
The new environment is expected to eventually reduce reliance on multiple legacy portals while providing IRCC with modern tools for case management, data, reporting and inventory management. IRCC says the modernization is being implemented in phases to reduce risks and introduce improvements progressively.
However, several important questions remain unanswered.
IRCC has not yet publicly confirmed:
- How existing Express Entry profiles will be transferred
- Whether applicants will need to create new credentials
- How authorized representatives will access the new system
- When existing portals will be retired
- Whether all Express Entry programs will transition simultaneously
- What applicants will need to do during the migration
Until official instructions are released, candidates should continue using the current IRCC systems.
What Should Express Entry Applicants Do Now?
There is currently no need to recreate an Express Entry profile simply because IRCC is developing a new platform.
Applicants should instead focus on maintaining an accurate profile and keeping important documents valid, including language test results and educational credential assessments where applicable. IRCC also advises candidates to update their profiles when circumstances such as employment, marital status or other relevant information change.
If you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), remember that the invitation is currently valid for 60 days, so applicants should begin preparing their permanent residence application promptly.
