Canada’s Express Entry system is becoming increasingly competitive in 2026, even though the overall growth of the candidate pool has slowed significantly. According to the latest data released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Express Entry pool added only 897 new profiles between April 12 and April 26, 2026, a sharp decline compared to the previous increase of 2,193 profiles.

However, while total growth slowed by nearly 60%, competition among high-scoring candidates continues to intensify, especially for applicants with CRS scores above 500.

High CRS Score Ranges Continue to Grow

One of the most important developments in the latest Express Entry pool update is the continued increase in candidates scoring between 501 and 600 CRS points. This category added another 250 profiles during the two-week reporting period, signaling rising competition among skilled workers aiming for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR).

At the same time, the 601–1200 CRS range grew by 147 profiles, largely due to candidates receiving provincial nominations through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), which provide an additional 600 CRS points.

This increase at the top end of the pool is directly impacting draw cut-offs. The latest Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw held on April 28 issued only 2,000 invitations with a CRS cut-off score of 514. This marks the third consecutive CEC draw with reduced invitation volumes.

The tie-breaking rule for that draw reached back to September 24, 2025, highlighting how crowded the higher CRS ranges have become.

Mid-Range CRS Scores See Declines

Interestingly, several mid-range CRS categories between 421 and 460 experienced declines during this reporting period.

Immigration experts believe this was influenced by recent category-based draws, including:

  • French-language proficiency draw on April 15 with a CRS cut-off of 419;
  • Trades occupations draw on April 2 with a CRS cut-off of 477.

These targeted draws likely removed many candidates from the mid-range score bands.

Despite over 6,300 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) being issued between April 13 and April 15, the Express Entry pool still grew overall. This suggests that approximately 7,200 new profiles entered the system during those two weeks alone.

What This Means for Future Canada PR Applicants

The latest Express Entry trends show that Canada’s immigration system is becoming increasingly competitive for skilled workers.

Candidates with CRS scores below 500 may face longer wait times unless they improve their profiles through:

  • Higher language test scores;
  • Canadian work experience;
  • Provincial nominations;
  • French-language proficiency;
  • Additional education credentials.

As draw sizes continue to fluctuate, strategic immigration planning has become more important than ever for applicants hoping to secure Permanent Residency in Canada.

For many candidates, relying solely on the federal Express Entry system may no longer be enough. Exploring alternative immigration pathways such as PNPs, employer-sponsored work permits, or category-based draws can significantly improve the chances of receiving an invitation.
