Canada has expanded opportunities under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program by introducing two new facilitated work permit pathways for young professionals from Portugal and Taiwan. These new initiatives aim to strengthen international collaboration, support professional development, and allow young talent to gain valuable work experience in Canada.

The new pathways operate under the Young Professionals stream of the IEC program and provide employer-specific work permits for eligible participants.

Canada recently launched the following two programs:

  • Young Professionals Inov Contacto pathway – for Portuguese nationals

  • Young Professionals Taiwanese Global Pathfinder Initiative (TGPI) – for Taiwanese nationals

Both pathways provide structured opportunities for youth to gain professional experience in Canada while contributing to Canadian businesses and industries.

However, eligible youth from these countries can still apply through other IEC streams, such as Working Holiday or International Co-op (Internship), if they meet the program criteria.

Young Professionals Inov Contacto Pathway (Portugal)

The Young Professionals Inov Contacto program focuses on providing international internships for Portuguese youth aged 18 to 29. This pathway supports professional development by connecting participants with Canadian companies for structured work placements.

Internships typically last nine months, and the program is supported by AICEP Portugal, the Portuguese trade and investment agency.

One notable benefit is that AICEP covers several major expenses, including:

  • Round-trip travel costs

  • Health insurance

  • Living expenses during the stay in Canada

At the time of writing, the list of participating Canadian companies has not yet been publicly released.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Young Professionals Inov Contacto work permit, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid Portuguese passport for the entire stay in Canada

  • Have a signed job offer or internship contract from a participating employer

  • Work in a position related to their education or professional experience

  • Show proof of at least $2,500 in financial support

  • Have health insurance covering the full duration of the stay

  • Possess a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase one

  • Not be accompanied by dependents

  • Be admissible to Canada and pay the required government fees

Taiwanese Global Pathfinder Initiative (TGPI)

The Taiwanese Global Pathfinder Initiative (TGPI) is another new pathway designed to strengthen international cooperation and innovation between Taiwan and Canada.

This program is administered by Taiwan’s Youth Development Administration (YDA) and targets young professionals aged 18 to 30 who have relevant education or professional experience.

The program also offers strong financial support for participants.

The Taiwanese government covers several costs, including:

  • Round-trip airfare

  • Living expenses in Canada

  • Medical insurance during the stay

Applicants under the TGPI pathway must:

  • Hold a valid Taiwanese passport with a personal identification number

  • Have a job offer from a Canadian employer related to their field

  • Demonstrate professional development through the role

  • Show at least $2,500 in available funds

  • Maintain health insurance during their stay in Canada

  • Have a return ticket or enough funds to purchase one

  • Apply without accompanying dependents

  • Meet Canada’s admissibility requirements

What is the International Experience Canada (IEC) Program?

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is a youth mobility initiative that allows young people from partner countries to work and travel in Canada.

At the same time, it provides Canadian youth aged 18 to 35 the opportunity to gain international work experience in participating countries.
