Becoming a Canadian citizen is a proud moment and the final step in your immigration journey. After years of hard work, your dream of calling Canada home officially comes true at the Canadian citizenship ceremony. This important event marks the day you gain all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, including the right to vote and apply for a Canadian passport.

If you’re preparing for your ceremony, here’s everything you need to know about the process, what to bring, and how to make it a smooth experience.

What Happens at a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony?

The citizenship ceremony is where you officially become a Canadian citizen. During the event, you will:

  • Take the Oath of Citizenship (required for anyone aged 14 and older)

  • Sing the national anthem, “O Canada”

  • Sign the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship (OAC) form

  • Receive your Canadian citizenship certificate (paper or electronic)

The ceremony may also include special guests like elected officials, Indigenous representatives, and community speakers to celebrate this milestone.

Where Does the Ceremony Take Place?

Your citizenship ceremony can be either:

  • In-person: Held at an IRCC office or another designated location

  • Virtual: Conducted via a secure video conference link provided by IRCC

The type of ceremony you attend will be mentioned in your official invitation. If you need a different format, you can request a reschedule.

Your Citizenship Ceremony Invitation

You’ll receive an invitation by email, phone, or mail, which will include:

  • Date and time of the ceremony

  • Location or video conference link

  • Language of the ceremony (English, French, or bilingual)

  • Instructions on how to prepare

  • A consent form for photos/videos (in-person ceremonies)

IRCC usually sends the invitation at least one week before the ceremony.

What to Bring to the Citizenship Ceremony

IRCC requires you to bring:

  • Your ceremony invitation

  • PR card (even if expired) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)

  • Two pieces of photo ID with your signature (passport, driver’s license, health card)

  • Record of Landing (if you became a PR before June 28, 2002)

  • Scissors (for virtual ceremonies to cut your PR card)

  • Signed consent form (if applicable)

Optional items include a holy book for the oath, a water bottle, and a camera for pictures after the ceremony.

In-Person Citizenship Ceremony Rules

  • Stand during the Oath of Citizenship and national anthem

  • Avoid wearing strong perfumes or scented products

  • Do not take pictures until the ceremony ends

Virtual Citizenship Ceremony Rules

  • Join using the link provided in your invitation

  • Keep your camera on and remain visible at all times

  • Do not use virtual backgrounds

  • Stay in a quiet, stable environment

  • Do not take screenshots or recordings during the ceremony

Receiving Your Canadian Citizenship Certificate

After the ceremony, you’ll receive an official citizenship certificate, which is proof of your new status.

  • E-Certificate: Available within 5 business days through your IRCC portal

  • Paper Certificate (In-person): Given immediately after the ceremony

  • Paper Certificate (Virtual): Delivered by mail within 2–4 weeks

Check for any errors and request corrections within 90 days if needed.

Important: This certificate is not a travel document. To travel internationally, apply for a Canadian passport.
